Self compassion. What does this mean? We take care of people that need help. The best part is that we love taking care of everyone. Please take some time to check on yourself. Why? People living with memory loss give so many frustrating moments. There are so many things that we would love to be doing. Right?
It's funny. It's maddening. So many times you can be sitting with someone with memory loss and suddenly they lose interest. I just want to say that we can relate. I see people daily that get frustrated with the daily routine. I like to keep everyone busy. Seems like the people I give recreation to become frustrated. They leave the activity This is a reasonable reaction and it's fine to let this happen.
Take a moment and realize this person has memory loss and a sense of no control. You need to give this person space. This is so important. Don't give up at this point. I have seen this so many times while taking care of people. Go back an engage this person.
Please, don't me wrong, I know this is easier said than done. It's going to take practice. It will not work every time. This is a time to look at how you approached the person. Consider how you validated feelings. Might need to really consider you have given a hostile environment to this person. Perhaps it is the time to become a hero to this person. Re-start the opportunity for engagement.
You are doing great!
